The grey wall does a fantastic job of improving the quality of Front Page discussions. Those of us who enjoy followed privileges have an unspoken responsibility to steer the conversation in an entertaining and thought-provoking direction by starring grey commenters out from behind the wall. If anyone on the Jalopnik masthead is reading this, hear me out.

I don't know this guy personally, so I don't have any obligation to write this. But !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! has consistently been contributing outstanding posts to Oppositelock for several months. He made it onto the !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! with his hilarious satirical post on !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! .

More recently, he knocked it out of the park with !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! , which was shared to the front page. With 175 recommends on this article, it's clear the guy is building one hell of a credible reputation.

In my experience, the only way out of the grey is getting Oppo posts shared to the FP. Travis detailed how to do it last year. Follow his advice, and you might get shared to Jalopnik, and possibly out from the grey.

Too many scripted shenanigans and not enough organic shenanigans for my liking. Every single one of the challenges was (badly) faked to some extent. I enjoy episodes where things are (or at least appear) more real and organic like the cheap Italian supercars, British Leyland, or lorry driving episodes.

I seriously wonder if the cars just didn't fall apart like they wanted them to. I think there wasn't enough natural drama like james buying an old capri that overheated or all of them being in BLs or Alfas that catch on fire. So they had to hurry and find some ways to make it a bit more exciting than some slow and tough hatchbacks toddering around. And I think they still did a decent job. The supermarket one was excellent and come on, chasing the hatchback with the tank was cool even if it was staged.

Except they were staging things from the get go. Like Hammond's roll at the hillclimb. And I hated the super market bit. Hammond's run was so blatantly over the top ridiculous it crossed the point of being entertaining and was just dumb for me. The tank bit was reasonably cool though, I'll concede that.

Anyway, if you want a shot at being shared to the FP, you don't need to write in-depth articles. The powers that be like that stuff around here, but it's not necessary. The quick and easy formula would be:

Go to LiveLeak.com

Find a new video that relates to car culture

Grab a link of the vid off YouTube

Post to Oppo, Using An Attention-Grabbing Title Written In Title Case

Write a paragraph that sums up the video contents in a way that engages the reader

An example of an attention-grabbing title would be, "Woman Steals New Corvette, Crashes And Strips Naked In Street Masturbating". Just keep it to 65 characters or less.

Here's a vid on the FP of LiveLeak right now.

Just write a title like, "Asshat Parks Car With Reckless Abandon, Does Triple Lutz"

And fill it in with some filler text like,

You know you're in a hurry when you park your car like a figure skater. This video from Turkey shows an asshat driver doing exactly that. Blah blah blah."

Next thing you know, you get a notification that says " Asshat ... has been shared to Jalopnik". Plus the weekends are pretty slow, so Ballaban's pretty forgiving.

If that doesn't get you out of the grey, then I'll write an Oppo post petitioning for your followed status like I did for MtrRider.

I'll also add:

A big advantage of being out of the grey on FP is for the times we get to ask people questions. I really had a few interesting ones for Lutz, and many others. The grey tends to knock you out of any remote likelihood of getting anything answered.

First TG episode was crap- all they did was reminisce. I'm just hoping that there will be more compelling content in the weeks to come. At least we know that there's the P1 review upcoming, and a Disco Volante review (excited squeal)...
